People in Islam: Week 15: 4 — Imam Siraj Wahhaj.
Brother Siraj Wahaj, also known as Jeffrey Kearse, is an African American revert to Islam. He is an Imam at a Brooklyn Mosque named Al-Taqwa in New York, and he never fails to pay visits to the homeless shelter that resides a few blocks away from the masjid. Imam Siraj is also the leader of the Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA), and has given several lectures in ICNA and ISNA conventions.
Despite the fact that Imam Siraj has continually blessed so many peoples lives with his wisdom, support, and constant motivational speeches to do good, he is also a prolific speaker in the Unites States. Imam Siraj has done nothing but encourage Muslims to be God-fearing, enjoining good and forbid evil, practice regular charity, stay away from drugs, abstain from pre-marital relations, and promote the youth to be active in the community. He has also appeared on several national television talk shows and has had interviews with several media outlets.
In 1991 Wahhaj offered an invocation (opening prayer) to the United States House of Representatives; he was the first Muslim to do so. And according to several sources, Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright hosted Wahhaj and notable scholars for a Ramadan feast of lamb, lentils and saffron rice.
