afghangster:

I’ve been reading a lot about the Prophet’s life this Ramadan and I came across something interesting. As we all know, tribal warfare was prevalent during the Prophet’s time in Mecca. Finally the tribal chief of one of the Meccan tribes, Abdullah ibn Judan, was fed up with it. He held a meeting in his home for all those who wanted to end the tribal conflicts. The purpose of the meeting that night was to establish a pact of honor and justice. Members of numerous tribes pledged that it was their duty to intervene in conflicts and stand with the oppressed against the oppressor. The name of that pact was “The Pact of the Virtuous.” Prophet Muhammad (SAW) took part in that meeting.

After the Revelation, the Prophet (SAW) spoke about the pact and said, “I was present in Abdullah ibn Judan’s house when a pact was concluded, so excellent that I would not exchange my part in it even for a herd of red camels; and if now, in Islam, I was asked to take part in it, I would be glad to accept.

This showed that to the Prophet (SAW), it didn’t matter who came up with the pact. What mattered was the content. While the pact didn’t come from Islamic principles or sources, it still aligned with Islamic values which made it valid.

The Quran says Muslims are to enjoin the good and forbid the evil. Just because good is being done by a non-Muslim, doesn’t make it any less valuable. And it definitely doesn’t mean we can’t stand by it or participate in it.
