Hurt feelings of a revert

icicle-spirit:

Today I went to the mosque for Iftar, for the second time. It was very awkward and unpleasant.

My husband bought me a kufiya which I was very excited about! I decided I would wear it as a hijab. When I got there an older lady came up to me right away and asked “why are you wearing that?” I responded “Because I liked it.”

(I wish I had said “because I’m standing in solidarity with my brothers and sisters in Palestine.”)

I automatically felt self-conscious. Like am I not supposed to?

Some one told me it’s probably a cultural thing because ONLY men wear them. After this some of the other woman started looking at me. I felt horrible and so uncomfortable. I wanted to go home and change my hijab. I stuck it out till after I ate and left before Ishaa.

I don’t know how to take this or what to think. As a convert it’s already hard enough being isolated from your family and not having the experiences those lucky enough to be born in to a muslim family. Ramadan is only about fasting and praying because there is no celebration. Then to go to the mosque where I thought I was safe and with people that could relate, in the end I feel even more isolated now.

Not sure if I want to go to celebrate Eid tomorrow at the mosque….

Go to the mosque tomorrow as it is your right to do so and do it for the sake of Allah. If anyone looks at you wrongly or even utters a word ignore them completely and remember at the end of the day the pleasure of Allah is over anyone else pleasure or approval. May Allah may things easier on you, accept all of your efforts done for His sake, and shower His blessings and mercy upon you <3
