Assalam Walaikum. I'm a Muslim teenager who is undergoing alot of stress while awaiting for my 12th grade board examination results. I've been experiencing depression, I feel lethargic & right now, having eating disorders with the biggest problem, not getting sleep at night and breaking down very often. My family is worried and I'm too scared to tell them that I'm very scared for my Math exam results. Can you please help me? Please reply asap, because I'm getting suicidal thoughts. :/

Wa alaikum assalaam,

Insha Allah, this message reaches you in a better state of health and Imaan than when you sent it. Exams and the stresses of fulfilling expectations and goals is something that we all face, and for some it takes a heavier toll than it does for others. Still, we have to look at the things in our life that hold the truest value, and exams and grades aren’t amongst those things. Ask yourself about your life, and what parts of it make you happy. Embrace those aspects and build on them. Ask yourself what you’ve always dreamt of doing, and go out there and enjoy those things. Grades will not determine your success. They are merely a number.

I’ll tell you about my own experiences. I have always been a C-average student, and that was IF I were lucky. I loved to learn, but didn’t do well with exams and tests. I was passionate about so many things, but sitting in classrooms and lecture halls just didn’t work for me. Half way through my academic career in university (which I got in to by the skin of my teeth), I had to choose my family and responsibilities above my academic career, which was partially the reason for me leaving school. During this time, I went through similar feelings, emotions, and thoughts as you said you’re going through now. This lasted a few months, and then, a friend of mine reminded me of this (portion of a) verse:

“Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity.” - Quran (2:286)

What that told me was that whatever I was facing was something Allah knows I can handle, and so all I need to do is keep at it and have faith in Him. So, I began by going to the library and reading up on things that interested me. I don’t know if you’ve read my articles on my blog, but amongst them is poetry. I’m not the greatest poet out there by a long shot, but I enjoy writing and have been complimented on it many times, Alhamdulillah. Believe it or not, I failed every poetry class I had ever taken. Alhamdulillah, I also run a successful marketing consulting firm, which started with me doing basic web design for clients, and now has clients throughout North America. And once again, I had actually failed my computer science classes in university.

My point, Ayesha, isn’t to boast about my own successes, but to help you realize that grades are not what determine your success. What matters is how hard you work. When you go into an exam, into a job interview, into any major step in life, go in having prepared yourself by doing your best. The results are not in your control after that. Allah will bring about what’s best for you (“But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not” - Quran 2:216). And whether you recognize it then or not, what comes in life is always a blessing, because it’s a part of Allah’s plan.

Look at me. I’ve failed so many things in life, but I have also succeeded because of those failures. I have also set out towards certain things and succeeded in them when I thought I would fail. I’m certain that you’ve studied hard and prayed for success, and so, Allah will definitely bring about what’s best for you. Stress is one of the biggest deterrents of success and happiness. A friend of mine told me that his mother once said:

“To stress and worry is like insulting Allah, because it shows Him that you don’t trust Him enough to handle your affairs. So, instead of worrying, smile because the One with power over all will bring things to work out for you in the way that’s best for you, even if you don’t see it at first.”

I know it sounds tough to think about Ayesha, but put it aside in your mind. The results will not change over you worrying. Smile, because you trust that Allah will pull you through, and have faith that whatever comes will be what’s best for you in this life and the Next.

I will pray for you, your success, and your peace of mind and Imaan, and I ask that any readers that see this post do the same for our sister in Islam. Take care of yourself, and remember to smile, especially when you feel down :)
