My name is Haleemah and I accepted Islam when I was 17. Alhamdulillah I am now nearing 20 and I am currently a student nurse (and inshaAllah future Midwife) at the University of Edinburgh.

As part of the Nursing Society at the University of Edinburgh my fellow student nurses and I are fundraising for two incredible charities - Edinburgh’s Sick Kids Friends Foundation and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Not only that, but once we reach our funding raising target we will be flying out to Ghana to help rebuild a medical centre to benefit a local rural community! We will be staying in Ghana for a couple of weeks getting involved in lots of work to help make the medical centre fit for use while closely living and interacting with the locals and getting to know the customs and traditions of rural Ghanaian life. It is going to be an incredible adventure and challenge for us, both physically and mentally so all your support would be hugely appreciated!

Sick Kids Friends Foundation
The Sick Kids Friends Foundation was set up in 1992 to support the work of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh. The Hospital receives over 100,000 children through its doors each year from all over the East of Scotland.

The Sick Kids Friends Foundation give assistance in five primary areas:

• the provision of a wide variety of extra comforts, which make time in hospital better for children 
• the provision of extra child and family-friendly facilities 
• the purchase of extra medical equipment over and above NHS provision 
• the provision of extra support for sick children who are cared for in the Community 
• funding for extra training and research

Marie Curie Cancer Care
Marie Curie Cancer Care is a UK charity dedicated to the care of people with terminal cancer and other illnesses. Over the financial year 2010/11, we reached a total of 31,799 patients.
Marie Curie ise best known for our network of over 2,000 Nurses, who work in the homes of terminally ill patients across the UK, providing over 1.2 million hours of practical nursing care, assistance and support to Marie Curie patients along with supporting their families.

Marie Curie is also the biggest provider of hospice beds outside the NHS, and are expanding outpatient and day services at all their hospices. Their expert best quality end of life care in their nine hospices across the UK reached 8,393 people in 2010/11.

Not only this, but Marie Curie Cancer Care is a leader in research into the best ways of caring for people with terminal illnesses, and how care could be improved in future. They have their own research teams, and we external research programmes.

Marie Curie Cancer Care campaigns for more patients to be able to be cared for and die in their place of choice. Research shows around 64 per cent of people would like to die at home if they had a terminal illness, with a sizeable minority opting for hospice care.
